A Skincare Regimen That Actually Works.

skincare collage.jpg

Hello Y’all!! I hope you have had a great week so far and you are looking forward to the weekend. I guess we aren’t out of the freeze just yet :/ but I decided to  do a half hour lunch and take a nice walk. I discovered a Mediterranean cafe tucked in the corner of a building that I have walked by for almost a year without noticing; I’m already making plans to check it out. 😀

I was thinking to myself, ‘January isn’t over and I have pretty much riveted back to my usual skincare routine…which is ‘skincare at my convenience’. A friend of mine suggested using a combination of natural oils to remove my makeup which I think is a great idea but imagine me jumping off my couch at 2.00am after a late night or dozing off while trying to keep up with some late night TV show – then repeat that suggestion again – that would be an epic fail 😀 Having a skincare regimen that works shouldn’t be hard to keep up with and in my bid to kick old habits, I came up with what I would call  a basic skincare regimen that A-N-Y-O-N-E can follow and I’m sharing these basic to do items that will work with any skin type. These items range from grocery store brands to high end cosmetic lines depending on what your preference is. 😀

A Doable Skincare Regimen – 101

Clay Mask. Helps unclog your pores. Twice a month works great but if you’re out and about a lot, you might need to use it more often. There are so many products on the market from Queen Helen clay mask that are  more affordable to high end products like La Prairie masks.

A Gentle Astringent. Products that do not contain alcohol are best. Trust me, your skin will thank you for it a couple of years down the line.Witch Hazel is an amazing product!

An Eye Cream. With so many serums and instant result creams out there, I tend to go the organic route. Burt’s and Bees has an eye cream that works and has non of the scary ingredients in it. Use it twice a day.

Eye Makeup Remover. Having tried so many brands that claim to remove ‘ALL’ of your eye makeup. I’ve been disappointed to still find those mascara induced smudges you see first thing in the morning. But I was a little surprised to find a product that actually worked – Avon Moisture Effective Eye Makeup Remover Lotion!

Lip Balm. Brands from EOS, Blistex work great. A friend gifted me with a Cinnamint Lip Balm by Young Living Essential Oils that’s also very good. Thanks M. 😀

Mineral Peel. I cannot stress how important this is for your skin. If you are in your late twenties and up, I would recommend you try this at least once a month. Being out everyday coupled with daily makeup application plus all the toxic metals in our environment; you need a gentle mineral peel regimen that gets rid of the dead skin cells and help resurface new skin. I would recommend Avani mineral peel products because they are gentle, natural and affordable but if you would prefer high end lines, Vine Vera mineral peel works equally well.

Face Wash. I always go with any products that are gentle on the skin.

A Water Based Body Lotion. Water needs to be the major ingredient. Be on the look out for products that have collagen in them. The older we get, the more collagen we need to maintain the firm texture of our skin.

Sauna. One of the best ways to unclog and detox your whole body at once. I try to make it a habit to sauna after a swim. I can’t recommend a specific time frame (30 minutes – 1 hour) for a sauna session because our skin reach different breaking points -where we begin to sweat after being exposed to hot air – at different times.

Wipes. Organic, oil free, unscented baby wipes – yes I said baby wipes – work great! 😀

A go-to Homemade Facial. Take a peek in your kitchen cabinets and I can guarantee that the possibilities for a good facial are endless! 😀 We all have different skin types and varying levels of sensitivity to products, so please pay attention to your skin. Feel free to let me know what skincare regimen items work well for you. 😀 Until I come your way again next time, its ciao for now!

The Art of Handcrafting: A Distant Memory

early-british-women1

Hello Y’all! I hope you’ve had a good week so far. I was on YouTube catching up on a few channels I subscribe to and I came across – as always – another makeup tutorial that I usually end up watching even if I have other things to do. :/ As amazing as the ‘after’  effect was in comparison to the ‘before’, I see that the art of having a skill or a craft is fast becoming a distant memory in our generation. People need an outlet and in this case, makeup fills that void.

In every culture of the world, the women were raised with some crafting skill or the other. It was a requirement to be able to use your hands for a skill. I was thinking to myself that I do not know anyone in my age bracket that knows how to use a sewing machine (myself included)…and not that we would make our clothes ourselves 😀 (that would be disastrous), but just to know how to tinker with one. :/ Anyways no worries if you have no skills, feel free to blame it on the industrial revolution 😀 😀 for rendering us all inept in one way or the other.

Taking a ride down memory lane, It was my first week of 4th grade, there was a girl in my class who sat behind me that seemed to be poking around with two huge pins and some yarn; I later learned the term was called knitting. I was instantly fascinated and it wasn’t long before I pleaded with her to teach me how to knit. Before long I learned how to make a shawl, then a pair of socks and a cap – for fun! After 4th grade, my family moved to a different state and we had new neighbors. While playing outside every other evening, I noticed our neighbors cook would sit outside on their porch and knit. At the time, I had never heard the word ‘crochet’ before. She would do this between chores and as always, I was curious about how she was able to do that with one pin instead of two? I was fascinated and wanted to learn how. I would go and sit by her and watch her hands move very intricately between loops creating the most beautiful table cloths I have ever seen. I had to learn this new style of knitting and fast. She didn’t speak much english but she was very patient and happy to show me how.

Fast forward to present day, although a large portion of my job is done by clicking a mouse and sketching, every now and then I bring out my knit kit and continue working on that supposed table spread or blanket I have been knitting for a couple of years now… 😀 Its something I still find time to do. There is something very calming about knitting. Its as if your thoughts are streamlined into two basic things: where the hook needs to go and when to pull on more thread…very therapeutic if I might say. I have attached a few pictures. Let me know what your favorite crafting skill is and how you learned it. Until next time, I remain

Opinions: Yours, Mine and Theirs.

Hello All! Hope your week is going really well so far. I will be speaking about something that affects each and everyone of us (myself included) and would welcome your thoughts and comments on it. 🙂 So lets start off with a pop quiz question!

Do you know what the cheapest commodity on the planet is?…And I’m not referring to air because clean air is not even cheap. :/ The cheapest commodity on the planet are “OPINIONS”. And if you stand still long enough, I can bet you there’s someone waiting to dump one on you…because they can. :/ 🙂 ha ha

One of my industry favorites is renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. My fascination with architecture is not so much with bold and complex designs because any artistic individual can draw up the first weird – and often times a tad bit crazy – thing that comes to mind; but how that design is translated into a form with structural integrity…now that is what i call pure genius.

Santiago started out as a young man wanting to be an artist but a series of events led him to architecture school, and then to civil engineering becoming one of the few architects fully trained as an engineer. He has an amazing line up of successful projects over the years; but it wasn’t overnight. He endured many struggles and harsh opinions along the way to become the icon we applaud today. When he was first trying to break into the New York design scene through a showcase which he themed ‘sculpture into architecture’, he is quoted saying ‘ I am not aspiring. I would just like to contribute with a couple of gestures’. It was tough but he was persistent.

When I look in the eyes of little kids, I see dreamers who haven’t become tainted by the opinions and cutting remarks of people, family members, close friends and strangers. As adults, a lot of people have abandoned dreams, ideas and opportunities because someone said it couldn’t be done and had never been done before. A lot of people have been cowered into submission and conformity for so long that they do not know what might have been had they dug their heels in and stayed true to their dreams. The fear of  the backlash that comes with standing up for your dreams and daring to think differently is so strong that a lot of people are content to just tow the line like everyone else.

But guess what guys; as safe and secure that lifestyle might be…realize that we only get one shot at this thing called life and its better to try and fail than to never have tried at all. Its a new year and a new day. Shut out and shut down all and any opinions that are not stretching, challenging or pushing you towards reaching your fullest potential. You are worth it and you owe that much to yourself. 🙂 🙂 So until I come your way again next time, its ciao for now!!

We Made It!…Now What?

2017-collage

Happy New Year Everyone!!!! Hope you had a wonderful celebration. It doesn’t matter how you got into the year; whether you snoozed into, prayed into, played into or partied into the New year; what matters is ‘We’re Here! We Made It!…Now What Are You Going to Do About It? I imagine it almost feels like once the clock strikes 12:00 am, an imaginary timer starts ticking, everyone runs to an imaginary line and then its ‘on your mark, get set….Go’! 😀 😀

This year, I decided to get my list of New Year Resolutions done early…which was a lot of fun (not really…lol). I felt like I was about to pop a blood vessel and I wasn’t even halfway through my list yet :/ the pressure was on. My new year resolutions -as wonderful and easily attainable as they may be – don’t exactly last the whole year much less survive a couple of months 😦 and chatting with a few pals over the holidays made me realize one simple principle.

Commitment

You Need To Commit. It doesn’t matter how bold or how large you print those resolutions; whether you have them taped to your door, bathroom mirror or the ceiling over your bed. If you’re not committed to following through, you are ‘NOT’ going to.

On the other hand, it appears as if the year has been reduced to a bunch of checklists, goals, events and deadlines. :/ Unfortunately, that’s the way a huge number of the populace (myself included) keep themselves on track these days; coupled with the dilemma of having a million things vying for your attention on a daily basis.

Now, there’s really nothing wrong with having goals and resolutions but sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves that if we aren’t careful, we might loose sight of what’s actually important. Life is too short to be lived to attain goals only – that’s what robots are for- and since we have a loooong 363 more days to go, why not have fun while you’re at it.

A Few Snippets From My New Years Resolution For 2017

  • I will take my earphones out more often and experience the sounds around me.
  • I am determined to be mindful.
  • I will be present.
  • I will have fun while I’m at it.. 😀 😀

So while writing up those New Year Resolutions, don’t be afraid to dream big and expect big breaks but also be kind to yourself, find a balance and be realistic. Most importantly, learn to enjoy the moments you have with the people around you. 😀 Until I come your way again, its ciao for now!

Merry Christmas!…Countdown to 2017

christmas-theme

How are y’all doing? Its been a minute and I’m glad to be back. Thank you to my readers who’ve allowed me share my thoughts on this blog.  I appreciate the kind words, messages and feedback. Just know that where ever you are  – you are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!

Christmas is finally here…and you know what that means; the countdown to 2017 has begun. If you are reading this, you are alive and that’s  something to be thankful for. Christmas is a time to love on and appreciate family and the people we do have in our lives 😀 Its a time to wipe the slate clean for the past year – to be good to yourself and accept the things you could not change in the past twelve months, to forgive others for their shortcomings in both the little things and big areas of our life and to strive to do and be better.

I AM THANKFUL FOR …

Having survived another year of mad traffic. If you reside in the North Texas area, having people violate basic traffic rules or cut in front of you without a trafficator signal is the norm. I was literally on the road to becoming a decorated sailor – and yes, I said ‘SAILOR’. 😀 But i found a way around it. Instead of a slew of ‘bad words’ :D, I started out  by asking sweet questions like, ‘Did you forget to bring your brain out with you today’? 😀  Or ‘Do you know there are rear lights on the left and right side of your car that let us know where you intend to go? And guess what? – They’re absolutely free!! 😀 😀 ha ha. Those laughs help de-tense and de-stress you by the time you get to your destination.

The Waiter who gets my order right some of the time. Stopping by my favorite restaurant to pick up my order and getting back to work only to realize some item was no where to be found. (I’m not really the happiest camper when I’m hungry) 😦 I finally realized (duh) it wasn’t personal and they might have so much going on just trying to stay afloat during the lunch hour peak period, it was so easy to miss something. The few times they got my order right, I commended them for it so much so that these days whether I’m picking up an order or eating in, they double check to make sure.

So friends,…. no matter how amazingly high or Debbie downing low this year has been for you, I can guarantee there are at least a few things you’re thankful for, no matter how mundane and insignificant they might seem.

2016 has been a great year y’all…So feel free to write up your own list and try looking at the glass as half full instead of half empty and see how that changes your outlook and perception of the past couple of months.  I hope you have a very Merry Christmas.

Until I come your way next time. Ciao!

Cosmetic Products…Phase or Maze

20161204_173516

Hi everyone!!

I hope you had a fabulous week and you’re gearing up for Christmas? This week I will be sharing my thoughts on something I believe we need to take a moment to consider whether you’re a guy or a lady. We all have products we use and a cosmetic regimen we follow either on daily, weekly or monthly basis. In recent times, have you noticed – now more than ever before – that everywhere you turn, there’s some cosmetic product that claims to do something more amazing than what you already have? Everywhere you look most especially online, marketers are advertising products nonstop. It’s almost like you buy a product and before you’re halfway through it, something new comes out with huge claims and we are instantly sold. We end up with a plethora of products we don’t know what to do with and feel guilty throwing away. I have asked myself if we as a generation are just going through a phase driven by the consumerism mentality or is this a never ending maze where we just keep reaching for the next best thing.

In comes the dilemma of natural products and remedies versus chemically enhanced products. There are two extremes I notice a lot where a person is overtly into all things natural as opposed to another who uses every new product that comes on the scene. If you love cosmetics, you know you’ve tried some of those homemade, do it yourself recipes you find online. Just think up a random ‘How To…’ and look that up on YouTube; I can guarantee you will find someone somewhere willing to share their opinion on it…from how to reduce under-eye bags to carrying out a complete spa/detox treatment without leaving your home. The list is endless and can sometimes be exhausting.

A few years ago, I became consciously aware of the amount of chemicals in everything from processed food, groceries, hair products and cosmetics from a colleague of mine. She used minimal to zero makeup, had radiant skin, looked half her age, she had an active lifestyle, and positive energy all-the-time. I wanted to know what her secret was so we met up a couple of times and talked about life, food, beauty and cosmetics. I gleaned so much from her and changed my lifestyle;I have stuck to it for over 2 years now. I am listing some of the pointers she shared with me that have transformed my life for the better. I’m positive they will transform yours as well😁

Lifestyle Tweaks for Great Skin, A Better Body and a Regenerated You

Strive for a Healthy Mind, Body and Mental Balance. This is such a broad topic; balance in these areas mean different things to different people.

You Need to Sleep. Don’t wait until your’re tired, exhausted and running on empty before you hit the sack. Your body deserves as much attention as the items on your to-do list. Some medical practitioners are specific on the number of hours of sleep needed; I believe that the number of hours a persons needs in order to recharge and bounce back varies by the individual.

Give Yourself A Break. Realize that you cannot be everything to everyone in your life. Every now and then, take a day off just to focus on yourself. Go for a walk, get a pedicure, listen to your favorite music and laugh at your old pictures. Nobody wants to be around a ‘Kanye West Meltdown’ waiting to happen.😂😂

Determine to Eat Healthy-Er. Don’t wait until your body starts to fail to turn things around. Start changing your eating habits that aren’t kind to your body.

Stay Hydrated with the Good Stuff. Your skin is more supple and ages at a slower pace when you are constantly hydrated. Get into the habit of getting water instead of a soda or making a veggie smoothie when you get home after work instead of reaching for a beer; and try to cut down on the number of happy hour cocktails you would usually get.😎

Tweak Your Old Habits. Unless a person has a medical emergency that requires an about face lifestyle change, I get a little apprehensive about drastic changes.  I am all for small tweaks and baby steps because this is indeed going to be a lifestyle. There is a reason why those instant face lifts, crash diets and  microwave results don’t tend to last very long and if they do the side effects aren’t pleasant.😷

Waste Not. Make a personal decision to use up all products you currently have before stocking up on the next best thing😘

These pointers listed above do not in anyway ban the use of cosmetics nor disqualify the use of natural and organic homemade remedies either. I don’t know what life would be without cosmetics..the word ‘dire’ would be an understatement to describe the state of the universe 😀 😀 A lot of times people try to fix something on the outside that’s only a symptom instead of looking within to the root cause of an insecurity. If we take care of our bodies and stay nourished on the right things; I believe we would need minimal enhancements thereby reducing our exposure to only God knows what chemicals are in those serums 😀 ha ha!

Until I come your way next time, Ciao!!

That Sense of Fashion.

fashion-sense

Hello Y’all,

I hope you had a fab week of feasting and shopping especially now when all diets  should be off or on hold until the first week of January 2017! 😀 This week, I am going to be writing about what I call ‘That Sense of Fashion’. As a lover of fashion and personal style, I try to keep up with the trends albeit from a distance…some trends are amazingly genius while some are downright ‘what were you thinking’ crazy…ha ha!

A lot of times, a love of fashion is misconstrued to equal personal style and I am going to share my thoughts and let you come to your own conclusions. I am an avid watcher of fashion TV and have been for many years now. I do my best to keep up with Paris, Milan, London and New York Fashion week. Now, we all know that a lot of the clothing that’s often times modeled are not exactly items everyday people would wear; from being so beautiful you would have to find a special event to wear it to, to sometimes bordering on bizarre, or for specific body types and being extraordinarily expensive. :/ Then comes personal style…

Personal Style by my definition is a persons likes, taste, judgement, budget and how they want to be perceived summed up into one bold statement. I would like to categorize the art of style or the lack of it into 3 groups that I am going to shed some light on:

The Fashion Junkie: This group of people have to have e-v-e-r-y trending outfit. There isn’t much of the individuals personal style or input; “If it’s in, they want it. If it’s trending, they have to have it”.

The Elegant Stylist: This class of people love fashion just as much but court it on their own terms. They pick and choose creative aspects of fashion and are willing to improvise to attain a desired ensemble.

The No Style What-So-Ever Individual: This group of individuals have given up on ever finding their fashion sense…ever :/ Never fear…it’s not too late.

Personal Style and a Sense of Fashion come with having an artistic eye for detail and a creative imagination. For some, this comes naturally but for others it is something that can be learned if you are willing to put in the work. I am outlining below a few tips that can get you started on developing your very own fashion sense.

Starter Tips for Developing Your Own Fashion Sense

Honesty: You have to be honest with your body type…right now. Not the body you’re going to have when you finally loose those pounds you’ve been planning to loose for the past five years. Understand that you’re beginning a new phase and you need to know and accept where you are right now; this will serve as a guide to where you want to go moving forward.

Find Someone Whose Fashion Sense You Admire: An icon with a similar body type to you. A person that looks great all the time or someone you trust that has an eye for fashion and a taste for clothes; someone who can tell you the truth in love and help you tweak your wardrobe. For example: I love the late Audrey Hepburn and I have copied images of outfits she’s worn in the past that I absolutely adore. I have images of these outfits saved on my computer for references and inspiration when I go shopping.

Do Not Over Do It: Revamping your personal style and upping your fashion anther does not necessarily mean you have to burn all your clothes either…that would be a little extreme :/ But you need to go through your wardrobe and decide what items you would like to keep and what items you might need to get rid of.

Improvise! Improvise! Improvise!: There is a reason why the word ‘SALE’ is the next best thing since sliced bread (in my book) 😀 ha ha!

Learn the Art of ‘Mixing and Matching’: Have you ever stood in the middle of your closet, that’s filled with clothes (if I might add) and couldn’t find a single thing to wear??? I’ll tell you why – You already have a set idea in your mind on how you pair your clothes and you haven’t given yourself the fluidity to mix and match different items together. You never know what you can create unless you break your routine.

On a final note, there’s  nothing wrong with spending money on expensive clothing and if your job or lifestyle demand it, then go for it. But if you’re not at the Oscars or Met gala every other night, then what good is it to spend a ton of money on an outfit you get to wear 1.5 times in a year. Our fashion sense and personal style determine to an extent how we are perceived and addressed but above all, we must always strive to be confident in who we are as people with a deep awareness that our clothes as fashionably forward as they may be do not define us.

I’ve attached are some pictures from Vogue’s Paris Fashion Week 2016 Fall Collection featuring  some designers I love: Valentino, Balenciaga, Givenchy, Vetements, Louis Vuitton and Maison Margiela. I get to feast my eyes on the creative possibilities out there but also keeping in mind that the majority of these outfits are artworks and not exactly as practical in everyday life.

People and their Christmas Decor!

christmas tree.jpg

Hello Y’all

I hope you had a great week! This past Friday 11/18 was the first day it felt like Christmas was finally around the corner. I woke up to a deceptively bright and early sun accompanied by a very cold breeze. Not falling for that ‘sunny view’ from my window though 😀 Having lived in Ohio prior, I cannot tell you how many times I got dressed in the morning based off of that ‘sunny view’ from the window only for me get out the front door and turn back around for a complete change of clothes…the freeze was real! 😦 😦 The lessons learned from those episodes of silliness never leave you. Unfortunately, there were quite a few people lightly dressed today, hunched over and shivering as they literally sprinted to lunch. All that could have been avoided. :/

The Holidays are here and we all know that after thanksgiving, its literally a race to Christmas and then the New Year.  A time of family, lots of fun, presents and food. A time where all diets are off until the first week of the new year …at least in my world ha ha! 😀

When it comes to Christmas decorating, we all have our likes, personal preferences and family traditions we keep up with or at least try to 😀 Its a time of the year where for some individuals, they just can’t wait to get their hands on some Christmas themed decor. A few others literally look for the path of least resistance; how to pull off a fully decorated home, front yard and a few trees with the least amount of effort. Sound like you?

A friend of mine has a one foot tall Christmas tree where all the decor….and yes I said ‘ALL’ of the Christmas decor in that home goes on that tree. She just cannot be bothered with the stress of bringing out, putting up and taking down all that fluff when she could be spending her time with family doing something else more fun 😀 Another friend has an already decorated tree that comes down from the attic once a year and after the festivities are over, up it goes – back into the attic with a sheet thrown over to keep dust off of it. Imagine having ALL of your Christmas decor done in ten minutes or less!

On the other hand…some of my friends were ‘born’ to decorate. I kid you not. Their inspiration especially during the holidays go into something bordering between ‘amazing to a tad bit overwhelming’ to the ordinary simpleton; turning out homes so beautiful and intricately decorated you would almost believe they had some imaginary help from a couple of Santa’s elves to pull off (on one particular occasion) decorating three Christmas trees, a 2 story house and the front yard.

I am reminded of a trip to Brunswick, OH a few years ago where we drove by one of the most beautifully decorated neighborhoods I have ever seen just before Christmas. The neighbors take those competitions very seriously from what i learned and what exactly do they win? – Bragging rights for having the most beautifully decorated house for the next twelve months :/ I think I’ll pass on that please 😀 😀

But as fun as this all is, the end of the year is a time for taking stock. It’s a time to ask yourself questions like: How much you’ve grown, what you did right and what you need to improve on. It’s also a time to plan and be strategic for the New year. To aim as high as you possibly can so that you’re still within a successful range in spite of life events that we have no control over.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday and let me know what tactics you use to get through decorating this season – for the carefree among us; and for the amazingly creative readers please share what tips work best for you.

Ciao until next time!!

The Election Aftermath…11/9

clinton

The past few days have shaken up the American people and the world at large. There is so much uncertainty right now more than ever before; with the protests in response to the election results becoming more aggressive along with an escalating rise in hate crimes.

I always thought that we as a nation were past this but apparently we aren’t. Racism and prejudice has been here all along, simmering beneath the surface waiting for someone who was boisterous enough to call out what people were thinking but had no courage to say or act upon.

As skeptical as i was of both parties throughout the campaign, I have never been as appalled as I was to witness an avalanche of careless statements, racist rants, discriminatory remarks targeted at minorities, women and other faith religious groups from the republican candidate. It was almost otherworldly, I could not believe what I was hearing or the picture that kind of behavior painted to the world as a representation of the party. On the other hand; I felt that the democratic party as wonderful as they had performed as a whole, didn’t really have anything new to offer. It was going to be tweaks to the old plan that on many fronts hadn’t worked for many individuals over the last 4 years.

In life, its easy to throw stones. Its even easier to critic people and give all sorts of remarks and opinions UNTIL we find ourselves in a similar situation. So lets wait and see what would come of the next 4 years under a new governing party.

No matter what happens, we must never forget that we are first and foremost ‘human beings’. Irrespective of race and or ethnicity. We must realize that we all face the same daily struggles and are not immune to the feelings that govern the rest of mankind.

If you hate an individual or certain ethnic groups just because of their race (which they had nothing to do with), then that says something about you as a person. If you are genuinely happy, healthy and living a productive life or if you have some things going for you or you’re working towards your goals, dreams and life ambition or if you love yourself and are appreciative of the life you have no matter how perfect or imperfect it may be; you would not have the time of day to spend hating or harboring any ill towards anyone because you’re too preoccupied being your awesome self. That’s food for thought.

No one knows what the way forward is or what the future holds for this country but it is sometimes said that it often gets worse before it gets better and our only hope is to be the change we want to see in others.

Ciao until next time!
