Hello Y’all!! A belated welcome to the month of March…all the way from Dallas, Texas! It’s been a cool winter so far but I’m just about ready for some consistent warm weather right about now. ๐Ÿ˜จThe downside of winter is the fact that you can make up genuine excuses for E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G and get away with it.

My question is… ‘For how long’?

We had the holidays, Valentines day, Fat Tuesday and more sweet treats than should beย  legally consumed. I feel it’s time to get back into being fit, active and lean again ๐Ÿ˜€ I abhor the word ‘FAT’ when it comes to health and weight because it brings back all kinds of horrifying memories; the word is literally vanquished from my vocabulary unless we’re talking about “Fat Tuesday”…ha ha!

ย Its hard to maintain a fitness regimen especially if you’re always on the go and your lifestyle or job are not as predictable.

How To Get Flabby Fast

This is a no-brainier to most but for some, the flab creeps up on you so slowly that one day you look in the mirror and wonder what exactly it is you’re looking at – Like where did my toned abs go or for the guys, you may look like you’ve downsized to a one pack. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ This is so real, it’s not even funny. I am going to list a few things that may seem inconsequential but trust me, they add up. So stay with me. ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ˜

  • Happy Hour and Weekend Meetups

The weekend is finally here. You can kickback and relax a little.ย  All those cocktails aren’t going to drink themselves you know but they do add to the waistline. After all, a few drinks aren’t hurting anybody. But there’s an old saying ‘A little here, a little there and a pond becomes a river.

  • Late Night Dinners

Every now and then, I have days where I zone out on the couch for some ‘Do-Nothing Me-Time’. I catch up on movies, phone calls, my never ending to-do lists, a good facial mask, nail polish, with snacks nearby and a glass of wine. Once the snuggie comes out, its downhill from there – nothing healthy happens beyond this point. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  • Skipping The Gym

We all have things that interfere with our gym schedules every now and then. Skipping the gym may work when you have pressing appointments or deadlines; but when you see yourself slipping, its time to up your game and get back into your routine.

  • Not Reading The Labels on Food

There’s a reason why people advise against shopping when you’re hungry because we tend to grab everything that looks good instead of what’s really healthy for us. I feel I end up making decisions from my belly instead of from my brain. Taking the time to read the label will help you decide if you want for example a 230 calorie breakfast bar or a 120 calorie equally as tasty option. Its that simple but seldom ever done. ๐Ÿ˜ฃ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

Something Has Got To Give

Staying fit is a lifestyle. There’s no magic pill and even if there was, the side effects may not be pleasant. Its okay to have cheat days; just as long as every day does not become one. When going out to eat, try to make delicious but healthy choices; and if you intend to stuff your face, make a mental note to add a couple more minutes at the gym or swim a couple more laps than you usually would. If you see yourself slipping on your workout regimen, get up and start moving again. Lets beat the flab together!! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Until I come your way again, feel free to share your tips and tricks on staying fit.

No More Resolutions…Just Aspirations Please!!

Hello Y’all!! Welcome to a fabulous new week! The freeze is still on and I’m still trying to wrap my mind around how Houston can be getting snow this time of the year and not Dallas; not that I care but it’s just odd. :/ Can you believe it’s mid January already? The zip-line has begun…ha ha!

My neighbor has a 50 pound bulldog puppy that runs out to me every time I put my keys in the door. Today will be our 6th screaming episode…where i’m screaming in fright and the pup is super excited to say hello. ๐Ÿ˜ This gets me E-V-E-R-Y-T-I-M-E. I still don’t understand how a dog that size can move so stealthily; I just see something out of the corner of my eye and flashbacks of ALL the horror movies of mauling sessions combined into this one moment become a reality – in my mind.ย This is not a one time episode though. I get jumped by dogs all the time and most recently by a clients poodle. Everyone was like ‘it absolutely loves you’ :/ Now, I am not averse to dogs because growing up, my family always had dogs and as much as I didn’t really fuss and kiss on them (yuck), I was their primary caregiver and did right by them. So I guess its inevitable, I will probably end up with a few… eventually ๐Ÿ˜€ :/

No More Resolutions – Just Aspirations Please.

If you’re like the rest of us, by the month of March, those resolutions are dead and forgotten; And by December, we pledge to do better the next year. Like a wheel, the cycle repeats itself.ย  I made up my mind to switch things up and change my lingo this time around. I decided to set out with things I would love to accomplish in the year but with no definite timeline. The reason being that ‘life happens’ and ‘we don’t really have complete control over everything’. Knowing and accepting these simple facts take the pressure off of you.

  • So instead of resolving to loose ‘x’ pounds or kilograms this year, I aspire to keep making healthy choices through out the year that will get me closer to the desired weight I want. So in essence, you’ve set your sights on the goal that you WILL accomplish without your brain scrambling to fit that into an almost impossibleย  time frame.

  • When I get caught in traffic with bad drivers, I will picture myself running through a peaceful field full of soft lilies and dandelions – instead of reacting by saying all those ‘bad words’…ha ha!

So guys, I hope you have an amazing week and your resolutions for the year are transformed into aspirations without any of the extra pressure we tend to place on ourselves. Let’s Dip Those Down Days In Chocolate!

Hey Y’all! I hope the month of August has been off to an amazing start for you. The burn is almost over in North Texas which is worth celebrating…ha ha! Today, I want to talk about something that affects us all – even the best of us and unless you’re a direct descendant of Tony Robbins; you are not immune to the feelings that govern the rest of mankind.

Sometimes, life throws curve balls at the same time and in quick succession that we sometimes can’t seem to catch a break. We tend to store up the emotions associated with those events and keep it moving. We oftentimes never have the time to go back and really experience those events and we forget that our bodies deal with so much on a daily basis already; coupled with all the fun things we experience by just being adults .

There’s no denying that there are somethings that happened early on in our lives that some of us haven’t gotten over – things we had no control over, loss of loved ones or friends, failed relationships, being misunderstood or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. As time goes by, those events remain well hidden under layers and layers of walls. It’s no wonder meltdowns are considered the norm these days; more than they have ever been because we keep layering and layering occurrences until the breakdown happens.ย The end result: premature ageing, ulcers, weight gain, high blood pressure and more.

Money, success, sophistication coupled with all the serums in the world will not heal a wounded soul. Facing things one baby step at a time… eventually will. ๐Ÿ™‚ At some point, we have to get tired of wearing that same raggedy mask – year in year out – and start dealing with the real underlying root cause so we can truly live our lives from the inside out and not vice versa.

Down Days …Be Gone!

On those days I feel somewhat down, scheduling a quiet moment to think about what I’m feeling and why is a step in the right direction. A tissue box, my favorite facial mask and some nail polish while I’m at it ย work wonders – ALWAYS. There’s nothing wrong with killing a couple of birds with one stone ๐Ÿ˜€ . But take time to actually relive the experience, soak it in, acknowledge it and …be done with it. Journaling or video vlogging – where you actually articulate what you felt then and now and how you intend to grow from it going forward – are great outlets. Call a family member or persons connected to that event and let them know how you really felt and if they’ve passed; talk to someone trustworthy. The end goal is to just let it out and find a way to let it go.

When you’re done, take a nap. Go for a run. Swim. Trust me, the sun will shine brighter when you get up. You will feel lighter and you’ll have more room for positivity in your life because you’ve let go of baggage you’ve held unto and logged around for years. And always reward yourself afterwards. An easy reach is one of my favorites – Ben and Jerry’s ‘Everything But The’…chocolate ice cream. That Happy Place!

Happy New Month Y’all! I hope you’re enjoying the long weekend and gearing up for fireworks and the 4th of July fun fare? This week, I will be writing about what i’d like to call “That Happy Place” so stay with me.

I find that we all have a point, a goal, an achievement that once attained we will get to a place of bliss. This ‘set place’ means different things to different people. For some, its getting a certain position or having a net worth of certain figures. It could be having a family, buying a home or owning a business or a string of businesses. The list is endless. But asย ideal as these achievements are, once attained we may soak in it for a while but eventually an unrest that comes from within sets in and we need another conquest, another thing to aspire to in order to get back to ‘That happy Place’. The mirage of this ideal is the fact that the post keeps shifting and if we aren’t careful, we might go through life not having being present or sitting still long enough to be in the moment and just be plain old happy ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

My Definition of That Happy Place

Moments in life where you are at peace in the core of your being in spite of whatever’s happening in your world. You acknowledge that life is not and will never be perfect but as long as you’re breathing, you’ll keep doing the best you can. You are kind to your soul. You’re here now and will enjoy every moment. Tomorrow is another day!

A couple of days ago, I set out at lunch time without the gang to check out a coffee shop I had spotted a few days prior. It was a nice walk. The interior had a window wall system directly facing the DART with chairs lined up to enjoy the view. It took me a few minutes to take in the scene around me: the skyscrapers, people walking, the DART,…everything. As I sat there, it suddenly occurred to me that I was in a ‘Happy Place’. Looking back on my journey and how far I had come, the people in my life, the places I had been – the good, the bad and not so pretty – summed into this moment and I was….CONTENT. ย It took me sitting at a coffee shop on a rather quiet day enjoying the view of the outside world around me to realize it… ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

I believe that a happy place should be points where in spite of what life throws your way, you are accepting of who you are and at peace with yourself as a human being and confident that whatever the future brings, you’re planting your feet in the sand – ย and you’re ready to take it on.

Resilience: A Resolve. Not Defined By Strength

Hey Y’all! I hope your week went really well…and if it did not, at least you made it to Friday and hopefully you can get some time off to rest, re-evaluate and do better next week. I will be talking about something I love to do but don’t get a chance to do so as often as I would like because its so expensive and very time consuming.

Travelling!!

I find flying pretty interesting because not only do I get good views sitting by the window (a must have) but also the fact that you’re literally trapped sitting next to a complete stranger for the duration of the flight. ย ๐Ÿ˜€ In my mind, it can only go two ways and I’m going to explain in a minute what I mean. There are basically two kinds of people you sit next to on any given trip and I’m going to breakdown their categories based on my own travel experiences which have been quite a few over the years. There have been trips where I have exhibited traits from both categories, so its nothing to castigate yourself over if you are guilty of either or all..ha ha!

The Sunny Side Up People: ย A smile comes easy to these individuals. They’re eager to indulge in a little chit chat. I like to call it ‘testing the waters’, and if you’re receptive enough, it could be an interesting conversation, shared travel experiences, family photo swaps and nice places to check out – that is if you are intrigued by strangers; or it could be a barrage of non stop chatter if you just want to nap or finish that chapter you’ve been putting off for over 2 months.

The Occupied/Preoccupied/Work Centric People: These individuals are curt and they may not always mean to come across as rude, stoic, aloof or snobbish but they might have so much going on ‘head space wise’ that this might be the only quiet moment they’ve had to themselves in a while.

One Particular Trip

I was heading out to visit my family. I had just boarded and had settled in. The weather was nice so the probability of turbulence was next to nil. I was finally going to finish reading the last few chapters of my book! Things were looking good. ๐Ÿ˜€ Not long as more people came on-board, I see a woman walk right up to my row with a little boy (who I got to know was 7 years old and heading out to visit his cousins for a couple of days) and after exchanging a few pleasantries while stowing their bags away, they settled in. We took off and had stopped climbing (phew) and so I decided to pick up my Kindle and start reading. I can almost swear 2 mins hadn’t gone by when i heard the question ‘whata ya reading’? I turn to look into two intense brown eyes trying to peer into the screen of my device. I smiled, put it down and tried to explain the story-line in a summarized version that a 7 year old could understand. After I was done, he seemed to give it a thought for a few seconds then he nodded his head and was quiet so I went back to reading.

I kid you not 3 mins don’t go by and the next thing I hear is ‘why are ya reading’? I look up and at his Mum who gives me an apologetic ‘my son is curious about you and you don’t have a snowballs chance in hell until he gets all his questions answered’ look. So I smile (a happy but strained smile) and I tell him ‘I like to read when I’m not working’. Guess what the next question I was asked was…you got it! ‘What do you do’? At this point, I turned off my device and put it in my bag (I had resigned to fate that those few chapters would have to wait for the return trip :D) and I again do my best to break it down in the easiest way for him to understand. His eyes light up as he very proudly told me how he loved to draw and got his Mum to bring out his coloring book from his backpack in the overhead storage to show me some of his drawings and colors.

I don’t exactly remember how we transitioned to me drawing pictures of every and anything he could think of but that’s what ended up happening ๐Ÿ˜€ I drew everything from bicycles, planes, sunsets, to comic heroes I didn’t ย even know existed (that’s how you know you’re getting old ๐Ÿ˜€ ). It turned out to be so much fun we were getting interesting looks and smiles from a few of the passengers sitting close enough to hear our conversation. By the time the trip was over, I was very happy to hear him say ‘Aah-Ki-Tects were kinda cool’ and he would want to be one some day. I had just won a new convert…ha ha!

Bottom Line: Some doors in life will only open not because you will them to but because you don’t give up knocking. Happy Cinco De Mayo guys!! Until I come your way again, I remain

Its Time to Sprout this Spring!

Hey Y’all! Its been a minute since my last post and I want to thank you for checking in today. I trust your week has been off to an amazing start if your’re a ย ‘Fun Monday’ ๐Ÿ™‚ personality type but if not, the day usually begins with a little bit of pressure and tons of meetings :/ Anyways, its Springtime and its been so exhilarating to not have to wear as many layers (Yes, It gets cold in Dallas ๐Ÿ˜ฆ ) except for this past weekend where we had a hailstorm that made a friend of mines apartment complex look like a scene out of a movie with so many windscreens completely destroyed. There were tree branches and leaves E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E! So disrupting.

But I was thinking to myself that the concept of springtime isn’t just for plants; I like to think of it as a time to change things up…just a little bit (wink). If you’re aย regular on Periwinkle Starr, you do know that I don’t exactly find the concept of getting stuck, ruts or the idea of doing the same thing for long periods of time appealing ๐Ÿ˜€ I read an article somewhere that said: Doing something as simple as a task differently forces your brain to grow in another direction because (not quoting this verbatim), when a task is repeated over and over and it gets to a point where you do not need to think about it before executing it; your brain goes into what I like to call ‘autopilot or robot mode’ which leads to B-O-R-E-D-O-M in the long run. In my mind, I’m thinking about long factory assembly lines. Trust me, that ‘glazed-over, couch potato, in the zone’ routine takes the spark out of everyday living.

Lets Shake Things Up…A Little!

I can almost imagine a whiny voice saying ‘I just gave up so much for lent and now…THIS?! Lol, no one is asking you to give up anything…at least not today (wink). ๐Ÿ˜€ Just ‘try doing something you do on a regular or daily basis differently’. Thats It! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Take a different route on your way home. You just might discover some new development, new shops, a sports bar or some real estate potential. You never know.
  • Step up and do something that takes you a tad bit out of your comfort zone – like stepping up to give a presentation for your team at work or volunteering to read to kids at your neighborhood library.
  • Rekindling your love for amusement park rides and all things outdoorsy even though you still feel tremors from the last ride you had 7 years ago..ha ha!
  • Try a new beverage at your favorite spot instead of getting that same old large caramel cappuccino with extra extra sugar E-V-E-R-Y T-I-M-E (a direct recipe for diabetes if you ask me :/ …but its oh sooo good). The tweaking possibilities are endless so why not give it a try!?

It’s time to sprout this spring guys so don’t be afraid to go for it (trust me i’m speaking to myself as well)! ๐Ÿ˜€ Let me know what things you would like to tweak over the next couple of days. Just Ask!…You Might Be Surprised.

Hello All! I hope your Monday has been off to a great start? I got to meet up with a few friends that I haven’t seen in a long time but somehow we always seem to continue right where we left off and I absolutely love it! Whats unique about this group is the fact that we all work in different fields, have different backgrounds but we always have a blast E-V-E-R-Y-T-I-M-E ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ After catching up, one of the guys starts talking about his current situation – You know it starts to get deep after a few cocktails (those annoyingly tiny glasses that contain all the calories you require in a day :/ I am making a note to self to schedule an extra 20 minutes at the gym) ha ha!

Perceptions.ย 

Matt (not his real name) keeps seeing a girl he’s come to be intrigued by at his favorite spot during lunch hour on a regular basis. Now Matt is very particular and isn’t one to compliment ladies that easily so when he says ‘a lady is pretty’, trust me – you can take that to the bank! Anyways, he’s seen her a couple of times but hasn’t really summed up the courage to speak to her. She’s always on the takeout line, never eats in. He said ‘he thought’ she was single because she didn’t wear any rings. She was always well dressed and sometimes made small talk with the cashier. He ‘felt’ she came across as snobby, snooty or proud. He saw her come in on one occasion with a guy. He said they ‘seemed’ pretty close, friendly and talked a lot so he ‘assumed’ the guy might be her boyfriend. At this point in the conversation, it almost sounded like Matt had begun to dislike this girl he hadn’t technically met but was even more intrigued by. He had also built up an entirely new persona of this girl based on his ‘perceptions’ or ‘pointers’ (don’t even know how on earth he measures those yet) and wanted my take and the views of some of the ladies in our group on the issue.

Now, I like to sometimes consider myself to be a holistic individual – not making hasty conclusions or decisions based on lopsided or one sided information. I love to mentally remove myself from a situation and look at it from an outsiders perspective, then put myself in each parties shoes before I make ‘assumptions’ and even then I can’t be 100 percent accurate because I (quite frankly) do not reside in anyone else’s brain besides my own. I feel we (myself included) as people have become lazy in the sense that we are so quick to sum people up, situations and or events based off of a few pointers (we A-L-L have those) – because it saves us the time and discomfort of actually doing the work.

At the end of dinner, we (guys and gals) all agreed that Matt needed to go back to the restaurant and the next time he saw the mystery girl – He should take a deep breath, walk up to her, introduce himself and A-S-K her if she wanted to eat in and maybe get to know her a little bit more – instead of whining to us for half the night (love you Matt!! ha ha) because the bottom line is: In life, you can never quite tell and if you sum up the courage to ask, you might be surprised at what you just might learn!
