Happy New 2019!!

HN2019PeriwinkleStarr-collage.jpg

Happy New Year!!! Its 2019 y’all! Welcome to a new and better version of you. I am so glad to be back from the break. It was really refreshing to get away and spend time with family and loved ones especially during the holidays. I am back, recharged and pumped to hit the ground running this new year. I really don’t like making resolutions because I feel like by the end of the first quarter, they’re pretty much forgotten or relegated to the background. This year I am going to try to do a few things better but I am a little hesitant to call these tweaks to my daily life – resolutions. I feel like when I make something a resolution, it’s automatically meant to be broken. Its like placing something on a pedestal knowing fully well that it’s not going to live up to your expectations but you do so anyway. :/ Anyways…here it goes.

My New Year Resolutions….#Resolve

♥  Getting My ‘Beach Body’ Back!

Its a no brainier that I ate my way through the holidays. The food was so good and the sweets were worth every calorie…ha ha! But it’s time to get back to being fit. It’s time to snatch it all in again. Being a natural born sweet tooth, finding ways to get that craving met is a constant juggle. When I feel I’m leaning towards too many artificially sweet treats, I switch to naturally sweet items. Having a mid morning or mid afternoon treat is a necessity especially when I’m on the go. But in 2019, I intend to be more active this year and I plan on being active at least a minimum of thirty minutes E-V-E-R-Y-D-A-Y. Now this might be stretching it a little but my best bet is to aim high so when I fall…I’m not too far off.

♥  Better Time Management

In my opinion, time management is like a stacked deck of cards where one wrong move causes a downward spiral or domino effect across the board. I feel we can all do a bit or a whole lot better when it comes to time management and that’s something I intend improving on in 2019.

♥  More Meal Prepping And Eating Out Less.

I haven’t always been a fan of meal prepping because it takes the surprise out of meals in the sense that you know what you’re eating whether you feel like it or not. But from what I’v read, meal prepping is great because you can track your calories, save money and not have to make wrong choices when you’re super hungry…Being prepared by planning ahead helps nip those ‘carb induced’ cravings in the bud and keep your waistline from ballooning out of control. Don’t ask me how I know…LOL!

♥  Get Enough Sleep.

If your a jet-setter, always on the go type of person, getting a good nights sleep regularly will help offset the stress of everyday living. I intend being in bed at least 2 hours earlier than my usual. Sleep refreshes the body and slows down the aging process. All the serums in the world cannot heal a battered and used body.

♥  Stay Hydrated On The Good Stuff!

I have found some pretty good healthy smoothies online that I have incorporated into my meals and I feel a whole lot better for it. If you can’t eat your veggies, drink them!

♥  Be Health Conscious.

Stay up to date on all health related appointments. Be sensitive to your body and know when things feel right and when they don’t. Your life depends on it.

♥  Make Room for More Adventures in 2019!

This involves getting out of my own way…a bit more often. Need I say more 😀

So guys and ladies, 2019 will be whatever you want it to be. But I hope its a great year for you and I. I wish you an amazing run filled with positivity, good vibes and growth. We did it last year, lets go big this year and make it happen! Have a fun week! Until I come your way again, like, comment and subscribe. I remain,

A Perfect Christmas!

TPCPeriwinkleStarr-collage.jpg

Hello Y’all!! Its been a minute since my last post. Hope you are doing great in your part of the world? It’s the season to be merry and the countdown to Christmas has begun. Traffic has been a bear over the past couple of days without any respite. But in some weird way…I am not complaining. 😘😎 The activities are endless with everything from parties, plays, secret Santa’s and shopping…lots of it. We get to spend quality time with family and close friends but for some its just another holiday they hope to get through and quickly.

It’s been a very eventful and busy year. The year has had its up and ups and some lows in between as any year would bring. The key is not to loose sight of the highs because it’s oftentimes the norm for us to focus on the lows. One of my mantras for 2018 was to live with no regrets. To go to sleep each day knowing that I did good in the world and if I didn’t solve any problems at least I didn’t start any. To have healthy boundaries and to be mindful of my energy and state of mind at any given time.

A Perfect Christmas?

Is there any such thing as a perfect Christmas? In my opinion, Christmas quite frankly is what you make of it. Whether you are married or single, have family or no family. Whether you have a bunch of friends, or you have no friends. Whether you have multiple pets or no pets at all. There isn’t any such thing as a perfect Christmas. Some common sayings I hear a lot are ‘you get to pick your friends but you don’t pick your family’. How about ‘life’s a b***h and then you die’. 😒😱It can go downhill really fast and it doesn’t do you any good. One of my mantras for 2018 was to live with no regrets.

It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way

Holidays can be tough for some, especially when there are unresolved family matters or strained relationships. It could be very superficial for others, where the primary focus is on having everything perfect and denying the real underlying issues or choosing not to speak of them. But Christmas can be fun for others. It can be messy, un-perfect but still filled with love and happiness. Life is way too short to waste on things that don’t matter.

Admitting where you are in life. Being honest – no matter what that means to you – allows the universe help you. When you are open to receiving help, you will find a way.

Kick down those walls. To have genuine relationships, you need to be a genuine person that people can relate to. This is a ‘duh statement’ but oh so true. Don’t you wonder about those people who have a zillion social media friends but no true human connections or people to reach out to when they feel really low.

Don’t be afraid to reach out. Some where along the path of life, we picked up this ‘I don’t need nobody’ mentality. You have to retrain your brain. You are a human being. You need other humans 😀 Yes, you might have chosen bad humans in the past or unknowingly fell into the wrong hands but there are a million good ones out there. You only need to be more discerning the next time.

Talk about it. One of my favorite sayings is ‘ a problem shared with a trusted friend is half-solved!

Make it good this year. Call that old friend or family member. Go out and help make Christmas happen for someone less fortunate than yourself. Send presents to that old aunt of yours. Instead of waiting for great things to happen to you, get up, go out and make it happen for yourself!

May your Christmas be filled with the friendly chatter of family, until I come your way again and I promise you that it would be sooner. I remain

Winding Down into Fall!!!

WDIFPeriwinkleStarrcollage.jpg

Hello Y’all. It is Fall!!! The sweltering heat is slowly winding down and will soon be gone… even if its just for a few months. We are getting close to the end of the year and like every time, its like 2018 just zip-lined its way into the last quarter. Its about that time to put away my Summer clothes and set up my closet for Fall. We are officially in the last lap of the year. I feel its not too early to sit back, take a moment and look back at how well we’ve lived during the year. If you’ve been with my blog over the past two years, you’d notice that I’m all about improvements, taking stock, learning from my past in order to do better in the future.

Here are some of my lessons learned so far in 2018!!

  • Keep Being Active: I remember meeting up with a buddy of mine one day and showing up to the trail with a bag of Cheetos – don’t judge me 😀 But I was hungry and didn’t have time to eat but I showed up either way.  Being active is a lifestyle and we may never be perfect but choose to show up anyway.
  • Eat Healthy: The holiday season is around the corner and that downward sugar spiral is closer than you think. I’m making up my mind to make up for all the parties, events, binges and splurges by eating healthier in between ALL the festivities so I can cancel out my excesses.
  • Trust Your Gut: The older I get, the more I have learned to trust myself, to trust my gut feeling, my intuition in every area of my life and to not just shake it off if I feel some kind of way about something.
  • Balance The Books: This is a whole other blog post on it’s own if I need to elaborate on it but I’m just going to skim over to give you an idea of what i’m talking about. When I say ‘balance the books’,  I’m looking at everything from relationships, finances, health, spirituality etc. and I am looking at how I have lived, my choices, my sacrifices, what I’ve put in and what I’ve gotten back in return. I look at areas I could have done better and at areas I feel I need to improve on or make better choices. The bottom line is I know where I’m at and I’m not just waltzing through life without been accountable to myself, my time and to those around me.
  • Read More Books: I try to catch up on my reading every now and then. Even though I have a few more books to read before the end of the year, I’m on it and doing the best I can every chance that I get. 😀
  • Try A New Sport: Whether it’s golfing, volleyball on the weekends or meditation. I  personally don’t know ANYONE who is physically overactive but I feel most of us if not all of us could do better with a little bit more exercise.

  • Start Juicing: I remember being younger and my parents bought this ‘Juice Processor’ (that was what it was called back in the day) and at the time, I felt it was more of a hassle than a necessity. Now I’ve realized that with being on the go most of the time, juicing is an easier alternative to eating an actual meal but with the same or even more nutritional benefits.

We just had New York Fashion Week for 2018 and it was fun! There was a  showdown between Rihannas ‘Savage x Fenty’ line and Marc Jacobs presentation. I felt both shows were very unique in their own way. But as always, there’s the tendency to pit two very talented and gifted individuals against each other – even though they stem from different ends of the spectrum.  :/  Anyways, I saved some pictures from the Marc Jacobs clothing line that I found interesting and had to share with you.

A Do-Nothing Weekend…At last!!

ADNWALPeriwinkleStarrcollage

Hello Y’all! I hope your weekend has been nothing short of amazing. Can you believe we are already in the Ember months? It is SEPTEMBER!! …and Labor Day is a few hours away. I love to call it the start of the Holiday marathon because we just keep rolling from one to the other until the end of the year.

This blog title is so cliché because I feel like a do-nothing weekend is just not doable – but a ‘do-nothing stress inducing’ weekend absolutely is. Forgetting about deadlines, alarms and traffic is such a sweet spot to be in, even if it’s only for a few days. I have more time to spread out my activities as opposed to racing to get everything I need done in a 48 hour time crunch…ha ha! So here I am in my living room with my hair marinating in a blend of  natural and essential oils, nails done, face in a mask and writing this post with a sappy Hallmark movie playing in the background. I would say that I’m very intentional about doing nothing stress related for the next couple of days…ha ha.

Tips for a Fun Holiday Weekend!!

Snooze galore. Need I say more!

Pamper yourself – Get a facial, a massage, paint your nails, give yourself a mani pedi because you absolutely deserve it.

Catch up with family and friends.

Take your vitamins. I know this is funny but most people are always on the go during the week that they don’t stop to take ANY vitamins. This might seem trivial but since we get one body per lifetime, its best to keep it nourished and balanced – vitamin supplements help with that.

Socialize and have fun! – Pool parties, parks, picnics, barbecues. I know nothing about grilling but I love volunteering to be a taste tester. There are endless activities going on all over the DFW Metroplex so there’s no reason to stay home .

Drink red wine – your heart will thank you for it!

Exercise – swim, go for walks, zumba, hit the gym.

Take time to be quiet, calm and relaxed. For some this would entail things like meditation, listening to a good sermon, acupressure or acupuncture; do what works best for your body type.

Get refreshed!…I do realize that three days is a short period of time to de-stress but it is better than no time. Besides you will feel recharged and in tip top shape to hit the ground running again!

Happy Labor Day in advance!! Feel free to like, follow and share your fun tips for a do-nothing weekend!! So until I come your way again, its going to be lots of rest, fun, friends and food. Be safe and hope you have a fabulous time!!

Trick Yourself into Loosing a Few…

TYBILFPeriwinkleStarrcollage

Hello y’all! Hope your week has been nothing short of amazing in your part of the world? I guess I spoke too soon, the burn is back in North Texas, and no… this is not another whining session. It’s almost like we can’t ever be happy. Its too hot, it’s too cold, it’s too muggy… on and on like some of the creepy toys with recorded voices sold back in the day when I was growing up – that should have been illegal by the way. Anyway,s this weeks post is about something I have thought about a lot and I have had several chats with friends for a while now.

The Dilemma!

It’s a no brainier that the older we get, the harder it is for our bodies to bounce back from all the sugar, drinks and our predominantly high carb diet. I started believing that the scale was not my friend anymore; when in actual fact, your metabolism is slowing down and you need to be twice as active just to keep up. It’s like waking up one morning and walking past a mirror before doubling back and screaming ‘What is happening to me’? – a little dramatic you might say but the struggle is beyond real. Not taking yourself serious enough is what is happening. Rome wasn’t built in a day just like those pounds didn’t pop up overnight. The usual progression is about 10 pounds per year and viola!…I look like I ate a wildebeest for breakfast with a wardrobe full of clothes that do not fit.

Allow me to paint a picture in your mind – a picture of the solar system, with the planets spinning around the sun. Now imagine you are the sun, the center of ‘your’ universe and the planets represent other aspects of your life – family, work, relationships, dreams and goals. If you’re happy with yourself and that includes being satisfied with who you are in the core of your being, then everything else benefits and your world is so much better.

So Lets Start Small !!

•          Start taking walks

•          Opt for tea instead of hot chocolate or all those lattes.

•          Reduce your portions and increase your meals.

•          Make up for your excesses with more time spent being active.

•        Never use the word ‘diet’. Your brain will go into panic mode and start                storing aka hoarding excess glucose and some people end up gaining weight when dieting instead of loosing weight. The key is to eat more small portioned and healthy meals; this will trick your brain into thinking there’s always going to be food coming in thereby prompting it to release the excess glucose and you’ll start to shed.

•          Drink more water and less soda or fizzy drinks and less alcohol.

•          Your body deserves rest. All nighter’s are inevitable but sleep is a key ingredient to weight loss and maintenance.

•          Do a gut cleanse. The cravings for sugar, sweet treats and carbs may be due to an imbalance in your digestive tract. First do your research and proceed with a mild cleanse before going hardcore. Its best to check with your healthcare provider before embarking into the unknown.

These are simple tips that gradually ease you into the process and I’m positive you will be shedding a few in no time…only if you stick to the plan. Thanks for reading! Follow me and share your experiences on how to trick your body into shedding a few! Until I come your way next time, I remain

Slow Cooking …In Texas!

Hey Y’all! I hope your week has been as hot as mine. If you’re in North Texas, you know that there isn’t any escape from the heat at this time of year. I was in Austin for work and found it nice and pleasant…and by nice I’m referring to 86°F of sunshine. That was heaven compared to the miniature hell hole I have found myself in the last couple of weeks 😦 I can literally cook breakfast aka make scramble eggs on the bonnet of my car – it’s not even funny anymore; and ‘No!’ There is no upside to this situation. No bag of gold at the end of this rainbow, just heat…and lots of it. Anyways, I just needed to whine for a quick second.

In spite of the heat, I found myself making excuses just to stay home in the cool and do nothing; it wasn’t long before the scale started to ‘lie on me’…ha ha!

My Turning Point

Here I was trying to figure out how I was going to get more exercise without straining myself excessively when I got a message from a friend of mine asking if I wanted to go walking in the evenings? My reply was…YES!!! I got off my couch, put on my trainers and literally ran out the door before I could convince myself otherwise. My first walk was painful…and yes I said “walk’. I didn’t realize how unfit I was. We started walking a little over 5 miles four times a week. JUST. LIKE. THAT! If i could spend time watching TV for at least an hour each day, then I could walk for an hour and some every other day. So we would meetup at a park close to both our homes and off we went. Its been almost a month since I started walking outside and I feel so much better. I’m not up to running yet but I can do a light jog…(tongue hanging out) LOL!

Benefits of Walking

You’re out in nature.  You’re breathing in natural air and not central air. You get to catch up with friends. You will improve your circulation and in turn, your heart will thank you. You will begin to loose weight at a steady pace over time instead of crash diets and killer workout routines – in this heat!!

Safety Tips When Walking

•      Have your phone on you always.

•      Walk with friends or fitness buddies.

•      Having pepper spray on you doesn’t hurt.

•      If you’ve got allergies, take medication.

•      Walk in well lit areas.

These are a few pics from my trail. Let me know what tips you can share to stay fit. until I come your way again, stay cool, fit and hydrated.

Anthony Bourdain: A Friend in my Mind

ABAFriendInMyMindPStarrcollage.jpg

Friday morning was a mad dash. I was off to two different offsite meetings before heading back to work. At almost mid-day was when I looked up my twitter feed. In that moment, I felt like my heart skipped a beat. It read “Anthony Bourdain was found dead by suicide”. I didn’t really understand what it meant; I had just watched the last episode  of Parts Unknown on sunday so he was still pretty fresh in my mind. This week was awful for the entertainment industry, first Kate Spade and now Anthony. I was puzzled, sad, wondering, afraid, questioning all at the same time. Lets take a walk back to how he became a friend – in my mind.

An Authentic Human Being

Anthony Bourdain was a real and authentic human being. He had money, success, fame but he knew those things did not exempt him from life – the daily struggles of anyone alive on this planet. He was who he was and he wasn’t ashamed of it. His love of travel and of food took him all over the globe. He was curious about cultures different from his, intrigued about how people lived, their values and the things that set them apart from other groups. There had to be more to a person or groups of people and Bourdain understood that.

There was a humility about him; he was willing to travel to remote parts of the world to sit with total strangers, share a meal and just listen. He gave others a chance to paint their own pictures, an opportunity to tell their own story – not the scripts written by people outside their experience. He ate any where from the best restaurants in world to eating on street corners and in back alleys; on many occasions trying things from menu’s that some of us wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. This part of him I could so relate to because I have gotten sick so many times from tasting and trying different cuisines in the past that I made up my mind to live vicariously by watching Parts Unknown and the Travel Channel.

He had things that he struggled with, that was no secret. It was said that he ran from his demons but not fast enough. Could it be that if he had taken time to acknowledge the things he was struggling with instead of painting a different picture to the world, he might still be here. I remember his last visit to a remote village in Asia where he made an eerie comment saying ‘it would be the last time he would be back there’, – I cannot help but wonder if he already knew what he was going to do. So sad, sad indeed.

We can’t keep losing people like this.  Something as simple as talking to someone else can go a long way to being free. Diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle coupled with rest help re-center and refresh the body. Being in close contact with family, friends and loved ones keep us emotionally balanced. Mental illness is no respecter of persons. An icon was lost and we pray for peace for his family at this time.
